“He displays His power in the whirlwind and the storm.
The billowing clouds are the dust beneath His feet.” ~ Nahum 1:3, NLT

I rounded the curve at the top of the hill — the curve that runs alongside a glorious pasture lush from recent rains. Clouds bubbled, some ashen in color. In the distance the mountain range rippled in shades of navy and slate blue. A cooling breeze wiped the sweat from my brow.

The moment was so peaceful. The morning had been difficult as David’s dementia marches on in its devastation. These few minutes of respite along our country road were like giant gulps from the well of Living Water.

Just what I needed.

Clouds billowing over the mountain ridge caught my attention.

I recalled a quote from F.B. Meyer, “Never fear the rough waters ahead which through their proud contempt impede your progress. God is greater than the roar of raging water and the mighty waves of the sea. ‘The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever’ (Psalm 29:10). A storm is simply the hem of His robe, the sign of His coming, and the evidence of His Presence.”

The clouds are but the dust of His feet.
The clouds are but the dust of His feet.

… A storm is simply the hem of His robe, the sign of His coming, and the evidence of His Presence …

What an amazing thought.

The imagery is something I can take hold of to better understand the character of our God.

I think of His throne — His dwelling place — high above the earth, how His eyes roam to and fro across the earth searching for those who love Him and who need to be encouraged.*

I remember that He rides on the wings of the wind,** and how the clouds are the dust of His feet.***

These images sing to my visual-learning heart!

No, God is not some little man walking on top of the mountains. But the clouds help me visualize the Spirit of God actively engaged in the needs I face.

He is a very present help in times of trouble.

I look to the hills from whence comes my help.

How glorious is it to imagine that the storm clouds swelling and swirling are carrying my God across the mountaintops to rescue me from my despair?

Oh, if I can but touch the hem of His garment I will be made whole again!

Observing the clouds focused my thoughts on the Lord, the Creator of all things.
Observing the clouds focused my thoughts on the Lord, the Creator of all things.

And to think … without Jesus I wouldn’t know Him at all. Jesus was like God with skin on so the people could grasp the reality of a compassionate, yet mighty God who pursued them with His love.

Do you know my Jesus? My God? If you don’t, and you would like to, I’d be happy to introduce you. You may contact me directly at nan@nanjones.com.

I smiled as I turned to return home. The wind had kicked up and blew heartily against my back.

I wondered if that’s what goodness and mercy feel like as they follow us all the days of our lives.
