Are the Billowing Clouds the Dust Beneath His Feet?

As I rounded the curve at the top of the hill, I looked toward the heavens. The rolling clouds reminded me of a favorite Scripture: Nahum 1:3, “He displays His power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath His feet.”

Clouds Bubbled, Some Ashen in Color

Our dirt road runs alongside a glorious pasture lush from recent rains. Clouds bubbled, some ashen in color. In the distance, the mountain range rippled in shades of navy and slate blue. A cooling breeze wiped the sweat from my brow.

The moment was so peaceful! The morning had been difficult as David’s dementia marches on in its devastation. These few minutes of respite along our country road were like giant gulps from the well of Living Water.

billowing clouds

The clouds billowing over the mountain ridge held my attention.

I recalled a quote from F.B. Meyer, “Never fear the rough waters ahead which through their proud contempt impede your progress. God is greater than the roar of raging water and the mighty waves of the sea. ‘The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever’ (Psalm 29:10). A storm is simply the hem of His robe, the sign of His coming, and the evidence of His Presence.”

What an amazing thought, this imagery of the magnificence of God …

I think of His throne — His dwelling place — high above the earth, how His eyes roam to and fro across the earth searching for those who love Him and who need to be encouraged. (2 Chronicles 16:9)

billowing clouds are the dust of His feet

I remember that He rides on the wings of the wind, (Psalm 104:3) and I remember how the billowing clouds are the dust of His feet.

I remember, and my weary heart stirs within me, for I know He has heard the cries of my overwhelm. He is a very present help in times of trouble. I remember …

How glorious it is to imagine that the storm clouds billowing and swirling are carrying my God across the mountaintops to rescue me from my despair.

Oh, if I can but touch the hem of His garment, I will be made whole again!

The Image of Billowing Clouds Steadied My Heart

I smiled as I turned to walk home. The wind had kicked up and blew heartily against my back. I wondered if that’s what goodness and mercy feel like as they follow us all the days of our lives.
