When Dense Fog Obscures the Rising Sun, Where is God?

Oyster-gray clouds, low and heavy, shrouded the mountain. Dense fog had descended in the early morning hours, obscuring the rising sun and its swath of glorious color.

Expected color turned to gray.

Faithful light grew dim.

The Rising Sun Fought to Conquer the Morning Challenge

Deep inside, my spirit stirred as my thoughts resonated with the scene outside my window. I could see a golden glow through the veil of fog as the rising sun fought to conquer the morning challenge. Surely heavenly light and the majestic colors of dawn would reign.

Surely.

A cloud descended on my heart recently, dimming my joy, blurring my vision of the goodness of God. Life had been hard, challenging, and a bit overwhelming. Heavy emotions clouded my days — joy seemed out of reach. Glory turned to gray.

A golden glow of the rising sun fought to conquer the veil of fog.

And yet … yet, I knew the Lord was with me. My vision may have been blurred by the shroud of sorrow, but nothing could obliterate the golden hue permeating my darkness with an insistent and tenacious voice declaring, “I am here! Arise, shine, for your light has come! I, the Lord your God am with you.”

I’m so thankful for a God who is merciful — who searches my heart and knows my anxious thoughts. He draws near to those who are brokenhearted and crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). His eyes roam the earth searching for the one who loves Him and who needs to be encouraged and strengthened (2 Chronicles 16:9).

I set my gaze on the mountain ridge to catch a glimpse of the rising sun.

I sipped my coffee and set my gaze on the mountain ridge to catch a glimpse of the rising sun. Evergreens swayed in a gentle breeze, their branches reaching through the golden hue. In the quiet, in the stillness, I knew I wasn’t alone — the Spirit of God embraced me. I watched as the fog began to lift in the warming of the day and the sky heralded the colors of dawn once again.

The Rising Sun … Faithful and Eternal

The fog was temporary.

The rising sun, eternal … just like my Savior who permeates my darkness with His faithful light and paints my thoughts with glorious colors of peace as I rest in Him.

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living”  (Psalm 27:13).
