Scorched by flames, blackened by embers, the earth is ready to receive its life-sustaining rain.

Scorched by flames, blackened by embers, the earth is ready to receive its life-sustaining rain.

The eerie, mournful cry of multiple firetrucks sounded across the mountain landscape. Forests blazed. Mountain ridges lined with amber flames that licked and traced the ridge’s silhouette brought heartache and fear to small, rural communities.

Thousands of acres burned out of control. One spark grew to monstrous flames engulfing entire mountainsides. Heavy smoke hung in the air, shrouding the sun, choking the lungs. Despair filled hearts. Unbelief at such a tragedy captured thoughts and ignited fears.

As a community, we were helpless. At times, hopeless. Dry, parched land begged for relief.  Faith stormed heaven’s throne asking for the mercy gift of rain.

And God heard from His holy heaven.

Now is the appointed time for rain.

I believe God also heard the mournful cries of His people more than two thousand years ago and responded, “Now. Now is the appointed time for salvation and deliverance from the enemy’s snare. Now is the appointed time to bridge the gap between my holiness and the sinfulness of my children.

“Now is the time for my Son.”

“For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring; They will spring up among the grass like willows by the watercourses.” ~ Isaiah 44:3-4

God recognized the parched spirits, the thirst of those longing to know Him. He felt their hopelessness. He wept over their brokenness.

Even today God’s people know what it is to be weary, hopeless, and broken. Even today we cry out to know Him more, to lavish us with His grace.

Even today — especially today — we need a Savior.

In the shadows of the lofty mountains, scorched by flames, blackened by embers, the earth is ready to receive its life-sustaining rain. The appointed time is here.

The souls of men, darkened by the plight of sin, yearn to walk in the Light of God’s love and drink from the well of His salvation.

Now is the appointed time.

As we enter the Christmas season, let your faith arise to heaven’s throne. Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. Behold God’s Son, Jesus, who robes us in righteousness that we might know the One who loves us with an everlasting love.

Our mournful cries are heard. Our tears are known.

All because of a tiny babe lying in a manger so many years ago.
