“Then Moses said to God, ‘Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they say to me, “What is His Name?” what shall I say to them?’ And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.””
(Exodus 3:13,14)
Several years ago I dove into an in-depth bible study of the Names of God. This name – I AM WHO I AM – is, by far, my favorite. Each name revealed by God throughout the bible represents a different attribute of the Lord. And each name was revealed during a corresponding situation.
And this situation is a BIG one!
God is sending Moses into Egypt to speak with Pharaoh to demand the release of His enslaved children. When Moses asks the Lord, “Who shall I say has sent me?’, the Lord responds, “I AM WHO I AM, I AM has sent me to you.” This not only establishes the very existence of a Sovereign God, it also declares God’s relationship to His children.
“I AM WHO I AM! I AM everything you need me to be. I AM your deliverer, your provider, your Savior and Lord. You are my child and I am your God.”
And these things were spoken on the eve of their deliverance.
It is important to realize that this situation directly parallels our Christian journey. Egypt represents our bondage to sin before being delivered through the Blood of Jesus. We are the children of God and I AM is our Lord.
Now, here’s a special nugget of gold…
In John 8:56-58 Jesus says, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day and he saw it and was glad.” Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet 50 years old and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
WOW!! “I AM the same yesterday, today and forever.”
SELAH
Lord, You continue to amaze me with the depth of Your Word. It is astounding – so complex, yet so beautifully simple. I pray that You will continue to open the eyes of my understanding. I am hungry for more, Lord. You Word is alive, exciting and powerful…just as You are, Lord. I bow at the mention of Your Name.
