When your heart is weary, look for God. He is there

The day began with a dismal gray shroud of fog, not only in the morning sky, but in my heart. I had grown weary, heavy-laden, with tears poised to escape my tired eyes at any moment.

I spoke the Name of Jesus

Sitting in my quiet place beside the window, I sipped my coffee. I found myself speaking the Name of Jesus over and over again in a soft whisper — not from a place of agony, but from a place of longing.

Longing to be held.

Longing for the tension in my body and soul to be overcome by God’s love.

Longing to breathe without an overwhelming sense of sorrow.

Even when I'm weary, God is good.

From the corner of my eye came a flash of bright yellow. A brilliantly colored goldfinch had swooped in to enjoy breakfast at my birdfeeder. In July! I often see them in the spring, but I don’t recall ever seeing these beauties in late summer. But God …

God wanted to see me smile, and smile I did. My heart lept within me as I watched him feast at the table I had prepared for him and my other feathered friends.

“Thank You, Lord. Thank You for reminding me of Your goodness,” I spoke as I pondered the glory of His creation.

The Lord spoke to my weary heart

In my spirit came a gentle whisper, Have you not heard, Nan? Have you not known? I, the Lord, have created all things for My glory.

I knew the Lord was directing me to Isaiah 40:

26 Look up into the heavens.
    Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another,
    calling each by its name.
Because of His great power and incomparable strength,
not a single one is missing.
27 O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles?
O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights?
28 Have you never heard?
    Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of His understanding.”

When you are weary, look to God. He is there

A knowing stirred within me … He understands me. The Lord over all the earth understands me. He searches my heart and knows my anxious thoughts. When I am overwhelmed, the Lord does not condemn me. No! He draws near to comfort me in the reassurance of His love.

I will look to God, for He is good

This morning the reassurance came through the beauty of a goldfinch. Other days it might be the glory of a sunrise or the glimmer of the morning star in the darkest of night just before dawn. I’m so thankful the Lord delights in making Himself known to us when we seek Him, when we look for Him in the difficult places.

This I know … when I turn my eyes toward Jesus, the things of earth grow strangely dim. This morning He used a goldfinch to lift my weary eyes and heart to behold Him.
