I walked along our mountain road, heavy thoughts filling my mind. Future days are filled with the unknown as my husband and I travel a path marred by his dementia. How do I trust God with my heart when it is breaking and everything seems so uncertain?
Is God Really Trustworthy?
I found myself lost in memories.
I remember choosing the blue crayon — cobalt. The color of deep sky reaching the heavenly heights.
Placing my grandson’s tiny hand on the construction paper, I carefully traced his hand — every nook, every curve, every detail I could possibly capture.
A memory I could always hold.
This morning as I walked beneath a summer sky, birds serenading me from their stage in the trees, gentle breeze cooling, I pressed into Jesus.
And I remembered.

I remembered a quote by Charles Spurgeon:
“God is too good to be unkind. He is too wise to make a mistake. When I cannot trace His hand, I can always trust His heart.”
… when I can’t trace His hand, I can always trust His heart …
But how? How do I trust God with my heart?
Perhaps His heart and His hand are connected.
Can you imagine the size and power of His hand?
He holds the seas in the hollow of His hands (Isaiah 40:12). Our names are engraved on the palm of His hands (Isaiah 49:16). With His powerful right hand, He smites our enemies (Exodus 15:6), yet those same hands tenderly place our tears in His bottle of remembrance (Psalm 56:8).
But How Do I Trust God When I Can’t Trace His Hand?
And sometimes when our paths are crooked and skies are charcoal gray with worry, it’s hard to trace His hand — to figure out what He’s doing and where He is leading.
But when I close my eyes, speak the Name of Jesus, and reach out towards the light of heaven I can, by faith, feel His grip.
And I hear His delicate whisper saying,

“Do not yield to fear, for I am always near.
Never turn your gaze from me, for I am your faithful God.
I will infuse you with my strength
and help you in every situation.
I will hold you firmly with my victorious right hand’ …
“I am Yahweh, your mighty God!
I grip your right hand and won’t let you go!
I whisper to you:
‘Don’t be afraid; I am here to help you!’ ~ Isaiah 41:10, 13, TPT
That’s when I begin to trust His heart. His heart is towards me, not against me. His heart bursts with love from everlasting to everlasting — greater than I can comprehend.
I am safe.
My footing is sure as He leads me, even though future days are filled with the unknown.
By Faith, I Grip His Hand
So how do I trust God when I feel unsure? Like the memories the handprint of my grandson affords, I remember God’s faithfulness.
I look into the cobalt of a deep sky reaching heavenly heights and, though my path right now may not be clear enough to see, my heart tugs at the thought of my Father’s love …
… leading, guiding, comforting, and protecting me and, once again, I am a little child safe in my Father’s arms.
