keep my hand to the plow, Lord, but this dirt is hard

“But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.'” ~ Luke 9:62, NKJV

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” ~ Philippians 1:6, NLT

“that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;” ~ Colossians 1:10, NKJV

This Dirt is Baked with Stubbornness

Lord, You are my praise, my glory — You are my God. All that I am I give to You for You are the glory and the lifter of my head. I keep my hand to the plow, Lord, but the dirt is so hard. Fallow. Baked with stubbornness.

I’m sorry I’m so stubborn sometimes. Please forgive me. I delight in doing the work You have called me to do, but on the hard days it takes great effort to keep my hand to the plow.

I ask that You help me keep my eyes on You. Remind me of Your eternal perspective. When I can see things through the eyes of eternity, I find purpose in what I do — especially when it’s hard.

keep my hand to the plow, Lord

But when my flesh rears it’s ugly head, and stubbornness kicks in … I know I must grieve You. I’m so sorry. Thank You for Your longsuffering, for Your gentle correction.

The ground is hard. The earth has grown cold and dark, the peoples of the earth are turning from You, but the remnant cries out and I know You hear us. I know You love us with an everlasting love.

We are all called to be light-bearers in the darkness, carrying the light of Christ wherever we go, bringing Your love to the unloveable, standing for righteousness before the wicked and leading others into the way of salvation.

Strengthen Me to Keep My Hand to the Plow

It’s an honor and privilege to serve You, Lord. Strengthen me to keep my hand to the plow, eyes on You. I’m available. Speak, Lord, Your servant listens.

In Jesus’ Name I pray,

Amen — let it be so
