Like a storm in the night, the Lord fights for us.

Lightning split the darkness with an explosion of light. Thunder rumbled and roared as if it were rolling the darkness away like a thick, ugly carpet. Rain peppered down. Wind howled. And just like that, the storm was gone. I realized that like a storm in the night, the Lord fights for us.

Winds of Adversity Blow and God Arises

As I rolled out of bed, these thoughts were still with me.

In the storm’s wake came a refreshing. Renewal. Rain-soaked earth drank freely in the morning light. Parched trees and plants replenished from life-giving water glistened with thankfulness. And the birdsong began to sound from the old apple tree, their praise filling my heart as I, too, thanked the Lord for His shelter in the storm.

Like a storm in the night, the Lord fights for us.

I think the storms in our lives follow a similar pattern. A shroud of darkness falls over our hearts and minds, the difficult places trying to consume us. The winds of adversity and trial begin to howl their threats, trying to instill fear.

The battle ensues as the Lord fights for us. His voice thunders, shaking the earth with His power. His lightning splits the heavens as the spiritual battle takes place in the heavens — His army of angels engaging the principalities of darkness on our behalf.

David says it best, “In my distress, I called upon the Lord, and cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, and my cry came before Him, even to His ears. Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundation of the hills also quaked and were shaken because He was angry … The Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice … He sent out His arrows and scattered the foe, bolts of lightning in abundance, and He vanquished them” (Psalm 18:6-7,13-14).

Like a storm in the night, the Lord fights for us.

The Lord Victorious hears our cry and responds with power. He hastens to our side, He fights for us in our difficult place.

Can you see it?

If I can see something I can understand it. When I consider David’s lyrical description of God’s power responding to my distressful cry, I am encouraged. I am strengthened to lift my shield of faith higher to thwart the enemy’s attack because I can see the Lord fighting for me.

I hope You can see it too. Our God is for us, not against us. He is good. He is faithful. And He is able.

The Lord Fights for Us with the Fiercest of Love

The pouring, pounding rain had transitioned into a gentle shower sprinkling goodness and grace across the earth — across my heart reminding me I am not alone in the difficult place. My God is with me. He is with you.

His grace is sufficient.

He guards us and fights for us with the fiercest of love.
