Fog lay thick as a shroud this morning. A cool mist blanketed the earth as early fall temperatures butted up against the dog days of summer. I couldn’t see the old apple tree, but I could hear the morning choir perched on its branches. The sky held a warm glow as the sun pushed against the foggy veil.
I Couldn’t See Him Because of the Fog
My heart carried heavy burdens as I sat in the stillness of the morning. I prayed and watched, and watched and prayed as the fog began to lift. Prayer escaped my lips and drifted heavenward. I listened for God’s delicate whisper. There, sitting quietly on the iron shepherd’s hook outside my window, sat a mourning dove. He had been there all along, but I couldn’t see him because of the fog.
I quickly realized the Spirit of God is like this dove — He is with us, even when we don’t see Him, even when our difficulties cloud our vision and veil His presence. He is with us always … just beyond the veil.
The dove cocked his head, locking his eyes with mine. His velvety feathers shimmered like gossamer in the morning light breaking through the fog. I was mesmerized by his beauty and his peacefulness, intrigued by his presence. So still. So attentive. I realized the Lord was giving me a glimpse of His tender watchcare. He never sleeps nor slumbers. His eyes roam the earth searching for those who love Him who need to be encouraged.
I needed encouragement this morning. I needed a reminder of who I am to the Keeper of my soul … and who He is to me. My God is faithful. He is good. He is a very present help in trouble and a comforter to those who are crushed in spirit. I have placed my hope in Him, for He is my sure place — even when I can’t sense His presence.
As I considered the fog obscuring the dove outside my window, I was reminded of Hebrews 6:19, “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.” My hope in Jesus allows me to enter the Presence of the Lord. My hope in Jesus opens my eyes to see and awakens my heart to understand that I can fully trust His promises, especially those that tell me the Lord will never leave me nor forsake me — a much-needed reminder in this difficult place.
Jesus Makes it Possible to See Beyond the Veil
The sun burst fully through the fog and dried up the mist. Sunbeams streamed through the branches of the apple tree and shone on the wings of the dove. He tilted his head once more then lifted his wings in flight. Praise escaped my lips as tears coursed down my cheeks. Though my heart is overwhelmed, I know I’m not alone. My God is with me … just beyond the veil.
