Sunshine bathed my face in warm light as I gazed at the sapphire sky of early fall. Peace stirred within me — a peace long sought after. I walked up the gravel drive of the country church nestled in our mountain hollar. Sitting down on the church’s top step, I wrapped my arms around my knees, intertwined my fingers, gently rocked, and thought of the Lord — Jehovah Shalom, the Lord my Peace.
Leaning back on my elbows I looked upward.
My Help Comes From the Lord
“I will lift up my eyes to the hills — From whence comes my help?” asked the psalmist. “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2).
… my help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth — His help born of an everlasting love.
I am learning this Truth deep in my knower. I am learning that He is Jehovah Shalom — the peace I’ve long sought after. He is my provider, my protector, my sure place. “He will not allow my foot to be moved; He who keeps me will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:3-4). He watches over me day and night — no weapon formed against me will ever prosper.
My faithful God goes before me making the crooked places straight, redeeming what the enemy has stolen, bathing me in grace when I feel I can’t go on, and wrapping me in His perfect peace.
He is Jehovah Shalom, the Lord my Peace
When I want to stray because distractions call my name or my stubbornness gets the best of me, His Truth holds me steady, His shield is a bulwark about me thwarting the fiery darts of the enemy.
Why? Because He is the keeper of my soul. I can rest in His arms even in the midst of a battle because He is Jehovah Shalom, my peace. The evil one can bring me no harm.
“Fear not, for I am with you,” He whispers to my heart. “Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand’” (Isaiah 41:10).
I am His child and He is my God.
“‘For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but My kindness shall not depart from you, nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has mercy on you” (Isaiah 54:10).
Nothing can separate me from His great love. Nothing. And nothing can separate you from His love either. He keeps us secure within the bond of His covenant and calls us His Beloved.
He is My God, and I Am His Child
Hints of crimson, apricot, and burnished gold are beginning to tinge the edges of the maple trees that flourish in our mountain hollar. I took in the beauty around me and smiled as a gentle breeze brushed against my face, for I have learned that my God walks upon the wings of the wind and sweetly reminds me of His presence.
Because He is my peace — the peace I long sought after.
