grace rains notes of His love in the dark of night

It rained last night. Long and hard. I noticed the birdseed in the tray outside my window saturated by heaven’s rain. In the dark of night, it poured, satisfying a thirsty earth and soaking the seeds with goodness.

God’s grace is like this. He draws close in the dark night of the soul and rains down upon His hurting child, saturating our hearts with reminders — with notes — of His love.

Am I Postured to Receive from the Lord?

But do we notice it? Is our heart a receptacle to receive from Him like the wooden tray outside my window? Do I allow the seed of His Word to saturate in His grace where it will grow and flourish? Especially in the dark of night?

My answer is, “I hope so.” But the truth is, there are days when I shut down and shut out what the Lord wants to give me.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1, NV )

God's love is extravagant.

Generous, extravagant love. Notes of grace raining down. Lavished means to heap, shower, pour, delight, and give freely. But we must posture ourselves to receive. In the dark of night when our hearts are troubled and our thoughts grow restless, this can be hard to do. We often grow numb, afraid to feel.

I sat in the soft light of morning and pondered these thoughts. Movement outside my window drew my attention as a sparrow ate from the tray of seeds saturated with heaven’s rain. And then he lifted his heart and sang. Praise. A response to God’s extravagant love.

Lord, You are So Tender in the Dark of Night

A song stirred quietly in my spirit. Lord, You are more precious than silver. Lord, You are more costly than gold. Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds and nothing I desire compares with You … nothing I desire compares with You.

The sparrow cocked his head and looked straight at me. Somehow my heart connected with his and together we gave thanks for the goodness of the Lord. In the dark of night, dawning with the soft light of morning, grace rained down notes of His love.
