I curled up on the end of our couch sipping hot coffee on that chilly May morning — gathering my thoughts, resting in the Lord … being still and remembering that He is God, and pondering His Secret Place. I’ve often sought understanding of this sacred place found in the shadow of His Presence.
It was a simple moment, but a holy one.
The Sacred Place, His Secret Place is Found in the Shadow of His Presence
My eyes surveyed the mountainous slope outside the window. I followed the lay of the land until my gaze landed on the ancient grape arbor.
The grapevine is only now beginning to unfurl its leaves, but on the corner post of the arbor a thick, wild honeysuckle grows. I don’t understand why, but its dense greenery never completely dies away in the winter — it thins out a little, but its reminder of life is always there.

Beneath the honeysuckle’s boughs hides a birdhouse that shelters a wren family each spring. It’s been there for years as have the returning wrens.
Such a secret place. Sacred place.
As I watched daddy wren fly in and out of the tiny house feeding his brood hidden beneath the shelter of the lush vine, my heart stirred with a familiar verse — a sure place in my faith journey:
“He who dwells in the Secret Place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him will I trust.” ~ Psalm 91:1-2
Oh! What a Sacred Place God Has Deemed for Us
I could see it so clearly — this little family tucked away safe and secure in this place of grace, safe from life’s harms, hidden from their enemies, sheltered from the storms.
I think it’s no coincidence in this God-moment that the vine sheltering them is a honeysuckle, for we are taught that the law of the Lord — His Word — is sweeter than honey and life to our soul. It guards our mind, and guides our feet, keeping us hidden in the shelter of His Secret Place.
Oh! What a sacred place deemed just for us.
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
The Word is Jesus.

He was in the beginning with God.
In Him we live and move and have our being.
In Him we find our place of grace — safe from life’s harms, hidden from our enemies, sheltered from the storm.
I watched daddy wren swoop into his house with food in “hand”, faithfully caring for his own and I couldn’t help but think of the Father’s tender care for us — how He tucks us away safe and secure in His Secret Place.
A sacred place.
A place of grace.
Shelter from the storm.
