I needed help overcoming the overwhelming distress that kept me sleepless at night

It was a brisk morning. The fire crackled beside me overcoming the chill in our home. The Word of God lay open on my lap overcoming the fear that stirred within me.

Overcoming the Fear

In our living room my husband blared the television with its insistent updates on the coronavirus pandemic — a necessary part of our lives these days, but a fear producer as well. With David’s dementia, the pandemic has created enormous amounts of paranoia in his mind which has caused a very decipherable decline in his mental condition over the past few weeks.

Life is hard.

I know yours is difficult at this time, as well.

I needed help overcoming the distress of the coronavirus pandemic.

I needed help overcoming the overwhelming distress that kept me sleepless at night, almost to the point of being numb.

I heard the Lord’s quiet whisper calling me to come and sit with Him awhile — away from the news, away from the fear mongering, away from my distress.

Curling up on the loveseat in my study, I sought refuge in my Bible.

The Lord gave me a treasure.

“… for He has said, “I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!” So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently say,

“The Lord is my Helper [in time of need], I will not be afraid.
What will man [or this world, or the coronavirus] do to me?”
~ Hebrews 13:5-6, AMP

Here’s the treasure:

Overcoming the Overwhelming Distress

The Lord is my Helper …

The Greek word for ‘Helper’ is boethos (bah-ay-thoss). When we break this word down, it looks like this: boe — a cry for help; theo — to run.

Boethoss is one who comes running when we cry for help. The Lord is positioned and ready to rush to our side when we call upon His Name.

He is our Helper. We need not be afraid. We are not alone.

Greater is He that is in us, than he [or it] that is in the world.

Do you need help overcoming fear? The Lord is with us and will help us.

God is for us, not against us.

What He says He will do … He will do.

Who He says He is … He is!

He is our Helper!

And each time we speak His Name, the Name of Jesus, the Lord Himself rushes to our side to calm our fears and capture our restless thoughts. Great is His faithfulness!

We need only believe.
