To hear from God we must learn to listen.

“And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. So Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, for you did call me.’ Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy … Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel answered, ‘Speak, for Your servant hears.'” ~ 1 Samuel 3:8,10

Lord, it is such a privilege to know You — a miracle, really. May we never take it for granted. You are Almighty God, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords, and You are our friend.

You have promised that we will know Your voice, so why is it so hard? Why do we make it so hard? You pursue us with Your love. You delight in making Yourself known to us. You have trained us up as a child teaching us spiritual discernment, imparting to us Your wisdom — You have been a good Father.

Help us be still before You and learn to listen.

And You have taught us to recognize Your voice. Help us to trust that voice, Lord.

Help us be still before You and learn to listen.

That’s where the difficulty lies, isn’t it? We try to hear Your voice above the din of busyness.

But You don’t shout to us.

You speak in a gentle whisper. Teach us to be still so we can hear — to turn off devices, clear the calendar, safeguard our time set apart for You and cease striving in all things, remembering that You are God and You have something to say, if only we will listen.

Open our ears that we might hear. Awaken our hearts to know Your will. We desire to please You in all things. We desire to obey You, to serve You, and be a vessel for Your glory to be poured out into a hurting world that desperately needs You.

To hear from God requires being still before Him.

Remind us that You are not a god of confusion, but a God of Peace, and by Your peace You will guide us. You will make our steps known to us one step at a time. We can trust You to make it clear, even if and when the steps lead us out of our comfort zone. Rise up within us during those times and confirm to us that we are hearing You correctly.

Make us brave. Make us warriors. We give You our hearts and set our ears and thoughts toward You that we might discern Your will. Thank You for speaking often and clearly to us.

Speak, Lord, for Your servants are listening.

In Jesus’ Name I pray,

Amen
